Community Energy Services Corporation, a nonprofit serving the East Bay Area since 1986, is seeking individuals with experience in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector to join our Board of Directors.  This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about CESC’s mission and who can contribute to the organization’s success.

Mission
Community Energy Services promotes resource conservation and safety by providing building improvements and education where the Bay Area lives and works.

Vision
A community living and working in safe, efficient buildings and empowered to conserve energy and other resources.

Programs
CESC fulfills its mission by bringing a variety of innovative programs to small businesses, residents, and underserved communities in the Bay Area. CESC’s 20+ staff members provide program services such as: energy assessments, technical assistance, lighting and mechanical retrofits, solar consultations, and home improvements to improve safety, mitigate asthma triggers, and improve seismic safety.

CESC’s Board of Directors provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance to support the day-to-day operations of CESC under direction of the Executive Director (ED). The Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Responsibilities
* Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements CESC’s strategic plan
* Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by CESC for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
* Approving CESC’s annual budget, audit reports and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
* Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the ED
* Assisting the ED and Board Chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
* Partnering with the ED and other Board Members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
* Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments, for example: Finance, Strategic planning, Fundraising, and/or Board Development Committees
* Representing ED to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
* Ensuring ED’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities the organization serves
* Attending six bimonthly board meetings per year

Fundraising
CESC Board Members will consider CESC a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that CESC can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, CESC encourages Board Members to make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
* Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of CESC’s beneficiaries
* Extensive professional experience and accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector
* A commitment to and understanding of CESC’s beneficiaries, particularly low income households, small business owners, or seniors, preferably based on direct experience
* Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

Preferred Skills
* Familiarity with government programs, budgets, and processes, particularly the local governments located in the East Bay Area, and specifically in Contra Costa County
* Experience in fundraising through individual donations or through foundations
* Understanding of public utilities energy efficiency retrofit programs and funding
* Experience in residential construction, home improvements, seismic safety, and energy efficiency retrofits

Board Terms/Participation
CESC’s Board Members will serve a four-year term and be eligible for re-appointment for additional terms. Board meetings will be held bimonthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings. Service on CESC’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
