Green West Oakland

Check out our new video celebrating the work of the Green West Oakland program:

A partnership between CESC and the Alameda Green Business Program, Green West Oakland helped West Oakland businesses become Certified Green businesses!

Through an EPA grant, Green West Oakland staff worked directly with West Oakland businesses to provide free assessments, cash rebates, and ongoing technical assistance to complete the Green Business requirements and become a Certified Green business!

“As a green certified business, we are proud to be a part of a community that values preserving our environment.”

Bay Area Green Business Program

The Benefits of Being Green:

* Save from $100 to $5000 per year on operating costs depending on business size and type (savings most often result from energy and water efficiency, but also from reduced waste costs and improved staff health and productivity)
* Receive onsite technical assistance and instant referrals to efficiency rebates and resources
* Be recognized as a Green business leader and a good neighbor
* Operate as part of a recognized Green supply chain
* Build employee morale, health and commitment

In 1996, the Alameda County Green Business Program began offering technical assistance and incentives to auto repair shops wishing to go beyond basic regulatory requirements. The program was extended to printers and hotels in 2000. So far, over 290 Alameda County businesses and public agencies have formed partnerships with the San Francisco Bay Area Green Business Program.

Port of Oakland Market goes Green in West Oakland!

Community Energy Services and the Alameda County Green Business Program began the Green West Oakland Project earlier this year thanks to funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 9. Green West Oakland staff work directly with West Oakland businesses to provide free assessments, cash rebates, and ongoing technical assistance to complete the Green Business requirements and become a Certified Green business.

Oakland Port Scale and Mini-Mart recently completed the process, and are now Green Business Certified!

Oakland Port Scale began in 2003 weighing trucks leaving the Port of Oakland. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the business allows trucks to check their weight and make sure they are authorized for California highways. They are still at it, offering the only all-night scales at the Port of Oakland.

Soon after setting up shop, they noticed a need for small market at the Port to serve the truck drivers and longshoremen and women; selling safety equipment and small parts along with food and drinks, this mini-mart provides what the truckers and workers need while they are at the Port. Two regular shipping containers made up the first mini-mart; now the store is in a custom-made building constructed of four 40’ containers.

High utility costs and a desire to learn more about the Green Business Program  motivated the Oakland Port Scale and Mini-Mart to embark on Green Business certification. Being on Port property means the mini-mart pays a premium for electricity, and had already implemented measures to reduce their electricity use such as installing LED lights outside. The Green Business Program brought in EBMUD to help out the store make more energy-saving improvements, and the staff were amazed at the water savings from the simple faucet aerator they provided for free.

“Many people want to do the right thing, but they are not aware of what is possible. The Green Business Program helped me become aware, and now I am doing some of these same things at home.”  Bill Aboudi
